YOUR REPRESENTATIVE

A native of the Mississippi Gulf Coast born and raised in Escatawpa, David Baria graduated from Moss Point High School. David grew up with a deep love for the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which is why he returned before and after Hurricane Katrina. David earned a degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Southern Mississippi and later obtained his law degree from the University of Mississippi in 1990.

After Hurricane Katrina decimated his coastal community, insurance companies and special interest groups tried to take advantage of the people of Hancock County. This is when David felt called to run for office. He was elected to the Mississippi State Senate in 2008 and later ran for the Mississippi House of Representatives in 2011. In 2016, he was elected by his colleagues to serve as the House Minority Leader.

BRINGING NEW JOBS TO THE COAST

David has worked with both Republicans and Democrats to support and expand existing businesses in Hancock County like Mississippi’s original craft brewery, Lazy Magnolia. His efforts have helped enhance facilities like the Stennis Airport and Port Bienville and increase tourism in waterfront areas of Bay St. Louis and Waveland.

SUPPORTING LOCAL INDUSTRY

David is a leader in the fight to support and expand local job creators like the Stennis Space Center, Stennis Airport, Port Bienville, and the State Port at Gulfport. David understands how important these employers are to our region and will continue to fight for them.

STRENGTHENING SMALL BUSINESSES

David knows small businesses are the backbone of our community’s economy. He’s worked to cut red tape and cut taxes for our local businesses, so they can continue to grow and flourish. His votes on legislation to help small businesses like Lazy Magnolia have help them grow and flourish.

BOOSTING TOURISM

David is also a strong advocate for the Gulf Coast’s tourism industry, which creates jobs and boosts our economy. He helped secure Millions of dollars for the Infinity Science Museum, Hancock County’s state-of-the-art science center, and Hancock County’s athletic complex. Additionally, David pushed to rebuild the popular Buccaneer State Park on the beach near Waveland, an attraction seriously damaged by Hurricane Katrina. David has also sponsored legislation to boost tourism by approving amenities in our waterfront communities.

STRENGTHENING OUR SCHOOLS

David believes the legislature should follow the law and fully fund our public schools, as this is the only way to reduce class sizes and fairly compensate our teachers. David supported Initiative 42 because he wanted to ensure that our schools were fully funded every year. This is why he is endorsed by the Mississippi Association of Educators. It is clear that David strongly believes in public education, having two children graduate from the Bay-Waveland School District.

FAMILY VALUES

David and his wife Marcie are the proud parents of four children: Darden (now deceased), Merritt, Bess, and Max. They live in Old Town Bay St. Louis and are active members of Christ Episcopal Church, both of them having served on the Church Vestry. David loves spending time with his family and being an active member of the Bay St. Louis community. David has been a baseball, football and soccer coach in various Hancock County youth leagues over the last decade and supports a variety of youth fundraising efforts every year.

PROTECTING 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS

Growing up on the Gulf Coast, David developed a great appreciation for wildlife and fishing. David is an avid fisherman and hunter and a strong supporter of 2nd Amendment rights, which is why he has been endorsed by the NRA.
